On the one extreme, there are DJ's that work for free "just to get their foot in the door." The other end of the spectrum is comprised of "superstar" DJ's that earn over $10,000 per night. Here in Chicago, mobile DJ's charge between $400 and $1,000 per night. Nightclub DJ's earn considerably less (which is why many mobile DJ's don't bother with nightclubs). Rave DJ's usually earn more than club jocks (particularly the headliners). In London, resident DJ's average between $600 to $1,000 per night.


For illustrative purposes, If you spin for 5 hours and get paid $250, are you making $50 per hour? If you've answered yes, then there are a few things that you should consider.


Nightclubs are staffed by many workers that are paid on an hourly basis. As a "resident" DJ, you are typically considered one of the workers. Thus, even if you're paid "by the night," promoters often tends to view your pay in the same light as the rest of the staff (i.e., hourly). The mistake lies in the notion of comparing your pay to others on the payroll.


Why is this a mistake?

As a resident DJ, your duties extend beyond those 5 hours. In particular, you are expected to keep the club's music current.
However, when are you suppose to do that? In other words, is the club paying you to listen and learn music (like intro and outro cues) during your free time?

DJ's also invest a lot of money in equipment and music. How much of that $250 is allotted to purchasing cartridges, headphones, new music (so that the club feels trendy and makes money) and/or replacing worn records/equipment? In some cases, the club will reimburse your music expenses -- but will often pay less per night (and retain the records).


In addition, how much free time do you spend: reading charts and DJ magazines; practicing new mixes; downloading music (for some of you); driving across town just to have that one record; promoting your night(s); scouting clubs for new ideas; on costs associated with appearance (i.e., cloths, dry-cleaning, hair, etc.); talking to other DJ's about DJ related issues; working on the club's system and/or DJ booth; meeting with the owners/promoters about promotions; traveling to and from the location including unreimbursed travel expenses (for some of you); loading and un-loading records and/or equipment; training new DJ's (for some of you); bpm'ing and/or labeling records and archiving; etc.

The nightclub environment has its negative side. How much of that $250 will pay for health/dental insurance? Since the life of a nightclub is relatively short, how much job security does that $250 buy? The late hours should also be considered (which tends to disrupt traditional 9-to-5 life), as well as the number of nights the club provides (i.e., one or two nights per week). Some nightclubs forbid DJ's from working for competitors.


Most importantly, how much is your talent worth? You are an artist and should be paid accordingly. How much money is the club making from your following? How much revenue is the club generating because customers know "they play good music on that night" (even though they may not know you're the DJ)?

When free time, expenses, taxes, reputation, experience, reliability, and sacrifice are factored in, do you still think that a resident DJ receiving $250 for 5 hours made $50 an hour?

November 9, --Clearwater, Florida – Hammerax, famed for making cymbal-like instruments with sustain and musical effects that go well beyond the sonic possibilities of ordinary cymbals, has made Dame Glennie an official endorser. The first artist to sustain a full-time career as a touring solo percussionist, Glennie performs on the company's Boomywhang hybrids, which produce deep, fluttering sounds with cymbal-like highs. Of her colorful Hammerax hybrids, Glennie says, “Life begins with sound and ends with sound. The sense of curiosity that percussionists have seems to be forever magnified and there's no question that Hammerax has made it a commitment to stretch our imagination and curiosity beyond words. The range of products is fantastic with so many possibilities for their use in countless different musical contexts. I have no limits as to how I use these products - they are simply a great addition to my already expansive range of instruments."
"Glennie is the perfect endorser for our products due to her playing style," said John Stannard, founder of Hammerax. "Many of the Hammerax hybrids have found a home with classical percussionsist like her, but they also function as a new source of effects for drum set players. All our pieces are stick playable and very tough."

About Hammerax
Hammerax has an interesting history based on the life of founder John Stannard. Stannard grew up building instruments, constructing a banjo at age 6 and then building guitars with his father, a piano rebuilder and tuner by trade. In 1979 Stannard formed Om percussion, the company that would go on to invent the energy chime, the double row chime tree and the laminated temple block. In 1985 J W Stannard company was formed to make wind chimes tuned to ancient scales. In 1993 Stannard began hammering bronze, later studying traditional techniques on the island of Bali. In 2006, a lifetime of listening followed by a long and focused research period paid off. The small studio of metal smiths headed by Stannard unveiled a new line of hand hammered stick-playable hybrid instruments These hybrids combine instrument classes to form surprising results.

That song further echoed what Barack's campaign was all about, "It's time for change", and I must have listened to that song at least 20 times last night after Barack claimed the presidency in a very commanding victory. As I blazed my Obama ( that's Presidential for those who don't know...lol) I began to seriously think we now as Black people can without a doubt and no longer have to look into our children's eyes and tell a lie of hope to motivate them, "If you work hard enough and if it is your desire you can become President of the United States of America". It makes me feel proud that I can now look my nine year old son in the eyes and tell him "Son you can become President of the United states" and actually has meaning, it is no longer a false hope it now has merit.

I am not an emotional person but as a Man, I told everyone I knew that if this man won this election I knew I would shed tears and I did. I never thought in my lifetime would I live to see a Black man become President of these not so United States and that he could and would be the reason that these states would become united under a common belief, "It is time for change".
As I watched Jesse Jackson cry in a crowd of thousands I could only imagine his life flashing before his eyes all the dogs, water hoses, racial slurs, being spit on, and being arrested. This man has carried a torch of Hope and a Dream of his slain friend and mentor, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., for over forty years and to see that dream come true had to be truly overwhelming.

This has truly been a historical moment in all of our lives no matter what your race, but more change has to come about, it can't stop here there is still more history to be made and racial obstacles to overcome and it starts today. Record numbers of Black voters came out to the polls but it's still not enough, we have to believe in us more than anyone. An overwhelming %61 of Barack's votes came from white voters and they are to honestly be applauded for their belief that this was the Man that would bring about "Change" some of you may disagree. Black people we must do better in our support of one another to further bring about "Change" and to further make "The Dream" a reality.

WIllie the Kid made his debut earlier this month with "Absolute Greatness."
GRAND RAPIDS -- Rapper Willie the Kid has hovered on hip-hop's horizon for several years.
Now, after being signed to major recording imprint Aphilliates Music Group/Asylum Records (a division of Warner Music Group), the 22-year-old Grand Rapids native released his national solo debut, "Absolute Greatness," last week. It's the first time a West Michigan rapper has been signed to a major label.

"I've been doing music, pursuing music, making a name for myself and putting things together since I was a kid," he said. "I'm excited (about the new release) because of the quality of music on there. What's been put together, I'm real proud of."

Willie the Kid, born Willie Buckley, graduated from Ottawa Hills High School in 2004 and received a degree in mass communications and integrated communications from Clark Atlanta University in Atlanta, the city where he met platinum-selling producer DJ Don Cannon.

"I heard him rap, and that was all it took," Cannon said. "Will has been my guy ever since."

Willie the Kid, who now lives in Atlanta, said his album is the first official Aphilliates Music Group release, "so it further makes my debut an exciting project."

His older brother, underground hip-hop artist Lason Jackson -- La the Darkman -- is president of Aphilliates Music Group and greatly influenced Willie the Kid.

Jackson's debut album, 1998's "Heist of The Century," brought national attention to the Grand Rapids' hip-hop scene.

"I didn't want to be a fireman or basketball player. I wanted to be an MC," Willie the Kid said. "My brother got ... to learn from (Wu-Tang Clan's) RZA. That made me want to make it even more."

Willie the Kid's first recording appearance came in 2006, alongside rap heavyweights Lil' Wayne, Freeway and T.I. on the critically acclaimed underground song "Cannon (Remix)."

In 2007, the song "Taking Pictures" featured Willie and platinum-selling Young Jeezy, Jim Jones, Young Buck, Rick Ross and T.I.

His first single, "Love For Money," is an all-star collaboration with his brother, Trey Songz, Gucci Mane, Yung Joc, Flo Rida and Bun B. And this is just the beginning, he insisted.

"I'm always hungry for more," he said. "I never really feel like I've done enough.
